About the job you’re considering/The Role

Your Career

You will use your domain knowledge and technical skills to truly understand and solve the challenges faced by our clients, who are all world leading companies in science and technology. Your activities will vary from project to project, but will broadly involve data science and software engineering, from analysing and interpreting client data to developing bespoke software solutions in a range of programming languages. Projects themselves are varied, from developing smarter drug trials to controlling the orbit and attitude of satellites.

You will need to build excellent relationships to collaborate with colleagues and enthusiastically engage with clients. We will provide a dedicated support network around you to ensure the best start to your career. Project team sizes are typically small and durations are relatively short, so you will make a big impact and quickly gain experience across different domains, allowing you to apply innovative thinking and transferable skills to solve fresh challenges.

Your Future

The key to our success is the quality of our staff. We value your academic background as much as technical skills, so we do not expect you to be a software expert. If you have a good grounding in Python and a keen interest to learn, we will invest in you to develop professional skills in new technologies and languages. We will provide extensive training throughout your career and many courses often lead to recognised qualifications.

Working on our projects is hugely rewarding and you will never stop learning and developing. With support from your manager, you will shape your own career, and we will help you develop the skills you need to achieve your ambitions. Career paths can be focused on technology, domain expertise or people management, or a combination of these.

About You

  • PhD in a scientific field within STEM, with a strong preference for disciplines such as technical biosciences, bioinformatics, or cheminformatics.
  • Genuine interest in software development or complex data analysis. Preference for Python, but not limited to it.
  • Demonstrated proficiency or aptitude in software development and/or data science is required.
  • Applicants do not need to have completed their viva, but they should have submitted their thesis or be close to submission.

Personality:

  • Enjoy tackling/solving complex problems or handling and analyzing complex datasets
  • We value flexibility and adaptability in our team, and encourage applicants who can demonstrate the ability to handle evolving tasks and responsibilities.

We are looking for a creative problem solver with an excellent academic record in science, mathematics or engineering. Though not essential, we value PhDs and we recognise and reward the additional skills they bring. You should have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable explaining complex concepts to clients and colleagues from all backgrounds.

You should understand and enjoy programming in Python and be able to write a few lines of code. You should also know how various data science techniques, from statistics to machine learning, are used to interpret complex data.

Your Security Clearance

To be successfully appointed to this role you will need to undergo Baseline Personnel Security Standard checks.

There are no nationality or residency restrictions, although if you have resided outside of the UK within the last 3 years, further checks may be required.

There are other criteria and check required for BPSS, and throughout the recruitment process, you will be asked questions about your security clearance eligibility such as, but not limited to, country of residence and nationality.

Our Culture

We are proud of our amazing culture, where a positive attitude and a commitment to continuous learning are valued. The wellbeing and engagement of all staff is our priority, and we work in a collaborative and supportive environment with a good work-life balance. As well as a competitive starting salary, we offer a range of benefits, which you can select to fit your needs.

We encourage flexible working and we trust staff to balance the needs of their projects with their personal commitments. Sometimes you will be required to work on client sites, which are usually within easy reach of your base location. Sometimes you will dial in to remote meetings with a geographically dispersed team. At other times there is no substitute for meeting up with colleagues to work together and share ideas.

We are dedicated to creating a diverse environment and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We appreciate individuals for who they are and value the diversity they bring to the workplace.
